Joe's on Higgins, a family-owned pizzeria with a history dating back to 1952, recently relocated to a larger space on Higgins Road. Known for their tavern-style pizza, Joe's has been praised for their Chicago thin crust. Originally on the South Side, the family moved to the North Side in the 60s and eventually settled in a small brick building on Higgins in 1983. However, due to increased competition and changing consumer habits, it became necessary for Joe's to make changes to attract more customers. The old location had poor visibility and lacked curb appeal, causing potential customers to overlook the pizzeria.
Now, under the management of Frank DeMonte, the grandson of the founder, and his wife Gina, Joe's on Higgins has undergone a transformation. While the cherished pizza recipes have remained unchanged, the family recognized the need to adapt to the evolving neighborhood. One of the planned changes includes the addition of a patio, creating a welcoming and enjoyable outdoor dining experience for patrons. “We’re going more Italian, not as much pizzeria,” says DeMonte.
Design
Upon entering the restaurant, visitors are greeted with a combination of industrial and traditional design themes. The brick walls and exposed ceiling piping provide a nostalgic touch of old Chicago factories, while the chairs and tables adopt a timeless, classic style.
